6-Step Guide On How To Clean a Mattress Effectively

Springs + Foam

Whether you have a single mattress, or a queen or king mattress, cleaning a mattress can be a laborious task. However, it is necessary since mattresses usually accumulate many things, like dust mites, stains, sweat, dead skin, attract bed bugs, etc.

Therefore, learning how to clean a mattress can eventually come in handy.

To increase its durability and your health and sleep wellness, you must clean your mattress every once in a while, for example, in a 6-months period.

That is why we have gathered a step-by-step guide to help you make an intense and efficient clean. Be sure to keep reading and check it out!

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

The first step to cleaning your mattress is verifying if it has a cleaning guide you should follow.

After that, gather the cleaning supplies you might need to use. They usually are:

  • Stain-remover soap;
  • A vacuum cleaner with upholstery piece;
  • Baking soda;
  • Damp wiping cloths;
  • Water (preferably cold).

Step 2: Bedding Washing

Since you are giving your mattress a complete cleanse, bedding washing is also a necessary step to follow.

Take all the bedding like pillowcases, bed linen, covers, and wash them. Fresh bedding can help you sleep better.

Washing the bedding as the second step is also great because it can launder while you deal with the mattress cleaning. Remember to use a hot wash mode so you can have profound cleaning.

Step 3: Air The Mattress or Apply Baking Soda

Airing your mattress is a great way to clean it. You can let your mattress breathe from time to time, letting the odour out and drying off any remaining humidity.

You can do this step both before or after the cleaning process. It is always good to let your mattress get sunlight and fresh air.

Baking soda can also act as a moisture dryer and remove unpleasant odours in your mattress.

So, if you can not take your mattress out, you can use baking soda instead.

Step 4: Vacuuming

Now, it’s time to vacuum your mattress. If you have an upholstery tool, be sure to use it to make the cleaning easier.

Vacuum the entire mattress, including the sides. Also, try to reach not very easy to clean places so you can make a profound cleanse and get everything out.

Step 5: Dealing With The Stains

Now that you have a clean surface, you can go to the “dealing with the stains” part.

For that, use the damp wiping cloth and the stain-remover soap to work on the stain removing process. You can also use a sponge to rub the stains out.

But keep in mind that you should work on removing the stain spot by spot. Don’t soak your mattress!

If you haven’t applied baking soda yet, you can also do it now. And then, do another round of vacuuming to finalize.

Step 6: Do The Same On The Other Side

Remember to do the whole process on both sides of the mattress if it is not a single-sided mattress.

And if you don’t have a waterproof mattress protector, you should consider getting one to ease the cleaning process for when you have to do it again.

Now you know how to clean a mattress effectively!
